Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings
What is a MIAM?
A MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is your first step in exploring mediation and other options to help you resolve issues during or following a separation or divorce.
It’s a one to one meeting with an accredited mediator where you can learn more about how mediation works and whether it’s right for you and your situation. The mediator will assess whether mediation is suitable and safe for everyone involved, and tell you about other options available to you.

When is a MIAM required?
You’ll need to attend a MIAM in two situations:

- If you’re considering family mediation to make arrangements with your ex-partner regarding finances, property, or child arrangements following separation.
- If you plan to apply to the Family Court (for example, for decisions about finances or children), you must usually attend a MIAM first. You’ll need a MIAM Certificate to submit with your court application, unless you qualify for one of the limited exemptions. At Arch Family Mediation we will sign the certificate at no extra cost to you.
What happens at a MIAM?
During the MIAM:
- You will have an opportunity to tell the mediator about your circumstances, concerns and the issues that you need to resolve.
- The mediator will explain what mediation is and how it works, outline alternative ways to resolve things without going to court, and assess whether mediation is appropriate for your circumstances
This is also your opportunity to ask questions and consider your options in a confidential setting.
How long does a MIAM take?
A typical MIAM lasts about one hour.
At Arch Family Mediation, all MIAMs are conducted online.
What does a MIAM cost?
The cost of a MIAM at Arch Family Mediation is £150.
There are no additional charges for issuing a MIAM Certificate if needed for court proceedings.
What is a MIAM certificate?
If you decide to apply to the Family Court, you’ll need a MIAM Certificate as proof that you’ve attended a MIAM. We will sign this after the MIAM and email it to you. It will then form part of your application.
